Explore the beefier side of our community with the Stephenson County Best Burgers Tour. Each bar and restaurant on this list has something new to offer, from the Flaming Mort at Mort’s to the PB&J Burger at Brew and Chew to the build your own burger at Ridott Corners.

Mort’s Bar & Grill

A Freeport staple revived: Mort’s is a cornerstone of the historic downtown. New manager Mike Marten has exposed the beautiful tin ceilings while keeping the original Bears memorabilia theme that pioneered the local sports bar. Mort’s may not look like much from the outside, but inside you’ll be greeted warmly and you can enjoy a cold beer, a juicy burger (Try the Flaming Mort! – burger with pepper jack cheese, jalapeños and chipotle mayo) and a side of Mrs. Mike’s chips.

Union Dairy

If you’re looking to find a little old school cool, stop down to the Union Dairy for a taste of the classic 50’s malt shop experience. Since its early beginnings in 1914, the old-fashioned ice cream parlor in downtown Freeport has been passed along throughout the years before landing in the hands of the now Mayor of Freeport, Jodi Miller. When it comes to their menu, not only did the Union Dairy want their food to be as local as possible, but they wanted the names of the burgers to represent Freeport. So try the Lincoln-Douglas (Burger topped with freshly prepared horseradish, Havarti cheese, ketchup, mustard & pickle) or the Tutty (Burger topped with cheddar cheese, green olives, ketchup & mustard)!

For a funky twist on a classic, try the PB&J Burger – Burger topped with applewood smoked bacon, jalapeños, cheddar cheese, peanut butter and jelly.
